How To Avoid The Ten Most Common Mistakes In Decorating And Design

We all want to see our design projects to not only go well but to end up being something we really love. I have put together a list that will undoubtedly help you in your efforts to stream line the process and have a clearer vision of the role you play as the decision maker for your project.

1) Don't get caught unprepared.Your going to spend hard earned money and it must be invested wisely.  No matter what kind of home design project you are embarking on have a plan in place to keep you on track and focused on the end result.

2) Remember that there is an order to how things should be done. After a plan has been put into place there is a sequential approach that should be followed to ensure the project reaches the goals that have been established.

3) Never choose a paint color just because you like it. It's great to have colors to choose from and be inspired by, but there is a lot more to it. Color has to come from somewhere and this is where the sequence is so important. Depending on the scope of your project elements such as cabinetry, counter tops, flooring, furniture and drapery all have to be determined prior to paint or wall color. Following this order will ensure the best end result.

4) Get professional advice. If your project is one that will require several people to accomplish the task then be sure to obtain the services you need to have floor plans, scaled drawings if necessary and an over all design for the project. A professional has a wealth of knowledge that he/she can bring to you and your project that will help you sift through the multitude of decisions.

5) Never use untinted paint for your trim and ceilings. Always tint your whites so that they transition well with all tones of color.

6) Be careful not to have too many different paint color throughout your house. This can lead to imbalance and visual chaos. Be sure all colors are blended well and have the same tone and try and repeat color throughout the home as much as possible.

7) Remember not to forget the importance of balance in a space. Having a room full of furniture and then leaving windows uncovered will not yield an evenly balanced space.

8) For exterior projects never leave any element in the front of your home unfinished. Unfinished wood surfaces can make your home appear older and outdated. Get painting!!

9) Avoid painting your garage door white unless you have a house that is white. The garage is too large of a surface to be so white against a color. White is not a color it is a tone and needs to be used carefully.

10) Always put good thought into your exterior colors. Whether you are building or renovating it is important that the colors blend well and relate to one another.
